Metamorphosis of modern India: Sardar Patel’s genius of conflict resolution and diplomacy

Author(s): Akshay K Singh and Swati Awana

Abstract: Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was an eminent freedom fighter, social leader, political thinker, and visionary who thought way ahead of his time and gave India its unified identity post-colonial rule. The British left India to crumble into numerous small states, with ongoing social and religious conflicts. The Indian leadership was in utter dismay. This was when Patel emerged as the torchbearer of India’s unity and undertook the principal task of creating a united India. In present times, when India is facing several contemporary security challenges both from external and internal sources, many of these have roots in the historical blunders of the then leadership. The ongoing territorial standoff with China at several strategic points and other issues is one obvious case in point. In this scenario, Patel’s ideas and his views on foreign policy have become even more relevant. The central idea of primarily securing national interest while formulating foreign policies and maintaining diplomatic relations with other countries is a part of his legacy.
