The rise of artificial intelligence in military: A global perspective

Author(s): Shalini Sharma

Abstract:

Our world is evolving around artificial intelligence. By the end of this decade, AI will make a huge impact on everything related to our lives. Global spending on AI touched $118 billion in 2022 and is projected to surpass $300 billion in 2026. Nowadays we are doing a lot of things with the help of some AI tools and they have become an integral part of our daily life.
In this paper, we will study the Benefits of Artificial intelligence in the military and some AI applications used in the military worldwide. Every country wants to improve its military power and a revolution has been started in the world. AI is ready to change the nature of battle. States are currently rapidly working to use artificial intelligence (AI) to their military advantage. China, for example, has stated its intention to dominate the world in artificial intelligence by 2030. Its “New General AI Plan” proclaimed that: “AI is a strategic technology that will lead the future”. Similarly, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared: “Whoever becomes the leader in this sphere will become ruler of the world”. After this challenge of China and Russia, the US has committed to a “third offset” strategy. It will spend extensively on AI, autonomy, and robots to maintain its lead in defense. The Indian military is likewise attempting to utilize AI's capabilities. During the first 'AI in Defence' conference and exhibition, which was hosted by the Ministry of Defence in New Delhi on July 11, Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh unveiled seventy-five recent AI innovations.
Rajnath said, “Timely infusion of technologies like AI and Big Data in the defence sector is of utmost importance so that we are not left behind the technological curve and are able to take maximum advantage of technology for our services".
