Abstract: Urbanization is a widespread trend across the globe, including in India. While rapid urban growth is opening up various opportunities for everyday people, it also brings along some negative consequences for cities. In particular, the environment in these urban areas is suffering due to the chaotic and uncontrolled nature of urbanization in India, especially in North Bengal. The hill towns in North Bengal are facing challenges from high-rise buildings, increasing populations, poor waste management, and the rise of vehicles, shopping malls, and hotels. This has led to significant environmental degradation, causing frustration among the local residents in these hilly urban areas. Civil society groups are stepping up to address these issues and are taking initiatives to safeguard the urban environment. This paper aims to explore the urbanization process in India and examine the environmental movements led by civil society organizations in the urban areas of Darjeeling and Kalimpong. It will also look into the current state of these environmental efforts in those regions.
