Regional political parties and national politics in India: Some positive observations

Abstract: The article seeks to explain the role of regional political parties at national level in India especially since 1989. In the beginning, effort has been made to explore the various factors which contributed in the rise of regional political parties in India. Then their role in the formation of coalition governments at national level from 1989 till date has been examined. In the last part of the article, some positive aspects of the entry and active participation of the regional political parties at national level have been examined. The crux of the article lies in the role of regional political parties in the formation of the coalition governments at national level in fluid situations; to provide sustenance to such governments; making the decision making process and Indian Democracy more plural and participatory; converting the Indian polity into a cooperative and bargaining federalism and preventing the dominant national political party BJP from imposing its majoritarian agenda on the secular Indian society.
