The transition of Ghana’s authoritarian regimes to democratization
Author(s): Sandra Narh
Abstract: This essay explores Ghana’s transition from authoritarian regimes to democratization through the lens of comparative political theory. It draws on key arguments from Tilly, Lipset, Huntington, and others to examine how state formation, economic development, and civil society mobilization influenced Ghana’s democratic trajectory. The analysis concludes that while multiple factors contributed, economic development played a dominant role in propelling the shift. It further reflects on the legacy of competitive authoritarianism under PNDC rule.
