Janta Durbars in India: A critical analysis of public hearings as grievance redressal mechanisms

Author(s): Mona Das

Abstract: Janta Durbars, or public hearings, have emerged as a prominent grievance redressal mechanism in India since the 2000s. These events, conducted by various government officials, aim to provide a platform for direct interaction between citizens and authorities. However, the effectiveness and long-term impact of Janta Durbars as a governance practice warrant further examination. This paper critically analyzes the role of Janta Durbars in ensuring accountability and governmental responsiveness within democratic systems, exploring both their potential benefits and limitations.
