Reimagining social justice: The relevance of Ambedkar’s vision in addressing modern caste discrimination

Author(s): Subhasmita Dash

Abstract: Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s vision of social justice continues to hold deep significance in present-day India, where caste-based discrimination remains a pressing concern despite constitutional guarantees of equality. Although legal frameworks have outlawed untouchability and promoted affirmative action, caste hierarchies still influence access to education, employment, and social dignity. Ambedkar’s ideas—cantered on liberty, equality, fraternity, and the complete dismantling of the caste system—offer a moral and strategic foundation for addressing these persistent inequalities. His advocacy for education, social reform, and democratic participation underscores the need for inclusive development rooted in human dignity. In today’s context, where caste prejudice also appears in digital spaces and institutional settings, revisiting Ambedkar’s approach is more relevant than ever. His legacy inspires not only legal and political reforms but also grassroots movements that challenge systemic exclusion. This paper explores how Ambedkar’s thought can guide modern efforts toward a just and equal society, going beyond symbolic inclusion to ensure genuine empowerment. By reimagining social justice through his lens, we are encouraged to confront caste not as a relic of the past, but as a living reality that demands bold, compassionate, and sustained intervention.
