Abstract: This research paper explores the status and challenges of women prisoners in Haridwar and Dehradun jails in Uttarakhand, India, with a focus on gender-specific issues within the criminal justice system. Despite significant discussions around women’s empowerment, the condition of incarcerated women remains largely overlooked. By examining aspects such as basic amenities, demographics, and legal rights awareness, this study sheds light on the harsh realities faced by women in prisons. It emphasizes the need for urgent reforms to address overcrowding, inadequate infrastructure, and the violation of women’s rights. The paper also examines the broader context of gender inequality in India’s prison system, with a particular focus on the gender disparity in prison populations. The research findings underscore the importance of addressing the systemic issues that impact women prisoners, advocating for a more inclusive and equitable approach to criminal justice reform in India.
