Bosnia-Herzegovina’s dual crisis: Serbia’s expansionism and Russia’s strategic manoeuvring

Author(s): Ambreen Yousuf

Abstract: The Balkan state of Bosnia-Herzegovina is presently grappling with a twofold crisis; internally embedded and externally sponsored and both are the byproducts of its convoluted history. Serbia’s expansionist policies vis a vis Republica Srpska and Russia’s strategic maneuvers in the region are posing significant challenges to Bosnia’s sovereignty and long-term stability. Against this backdrop, the country is at a critical juncture, grappling with the implications of its past and looming specter of external interference. This article argues that Russian aggression and Serbian expansion towards Bosnia has increased risk factor that could result in replay of armed violence in the country, substantially destabilizing the entire Western Balkans.
