Political inclusion and role performance of elected women representatives in Panchayati Raj system: A study in Odisha

Author(s): Jayanta Parida

Abstract: This paper examines the Political inclusion and role performance of Elected Women Representatives (EWR) in the functioning of Gram Panchayats in Aul Block of Odisha. It finds that due to the provisions of 73rd Constitutional Amendment Act, a new set of women representatives came into Gram Panchayats. Reservation (affirmative action) has created a space for women’s needs within the structural framework of politics and legitimised women issues. But, affirmative action in the form of reservation has not been successful in ensuring “proper and effective representation” of women.
