Abstract: India witnessed an intermittent dialogue with the idea of One Nation One Election (ONOE) since independence. A number of Committees and Commission and other agencies, including non-governmental organizations have deliberated upon the idea and formulated observations. The observations documented and the public discourse continues to generate a debate among the protagonist and the critics. Situating these deliberations into the larger perspective of India’s democracy and its possible benefit associated with it, this work delved into the detail background and evolution of ONOE, its varied dimension of deliberations from the various stakeholder and its associated benefits and challenges the ONOE could possibly entails. It is an attempt to comprehend a holistic view on the idea of Simultaneous election. It accounts the constitutional foundations and provisions, evolution of the idea, insights of various committees, policy makers and the debates and discourse in the public sphere considering the afresh interest generated by the development in this regard in the form of the High-Level Committee Report on Simultaneous elections in India, 2024 and the Cabinet decision of endorsing it thereafter.
