Exploring the India-Russia Strategic Partnership Amid the Ukraine Conflict

Abstract: India has long-standing civilisational relations with Russia, which were further strengthened during the Cold War. However, the post-Cold War period was characterised by a unipolar world, with the rise of the United States as the sole superpower. This has prompted India to make significant changes in its foreign policy. In the present era, there has been a shift away from unipolarity towards a multipolar world. This new global landscape is marked by the emergence of influential Asian powers such as India and China, the increasing impact of globalisation, the growing influence of non-state actors, and the presence of numerous regional conflicts. In this scenario, India and Russia have rekindled the power of their bilateral relationship in recent years. However, the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict has made it challenging for India to maintain a delicate balance between Western powers and Russia. This article thoroughly explores the historical, political, economic, security, nuclear, space, cultural, and other bilateral relations in the wake of the Ukraine conflict. This paper presents several valuable suggestions for strengthening the relationship between India and Russia while maintaining positive relations with other countries. This study also presented a way forward for the strategic relationship.
