Empowering daughters through education: An analytical study of Kanya Sumangala Yojana in Uttar Pradesh

Author(s): Soniya Joshi and Shivani

Abstract: The education of girls has long been recognized as a critical factor for societal transformation, gender equality, and national development. Despite constitutional and legal provisions in India ensuring equal status and opportunities, girls’ educational advancement continues to be constrained by socio-cultural barriers, poverty, and gender discrimination. In response, the Government of Uttar Pradesh launched the Kanya Sumangala Yojana (KSY) in 2019, a comprehensive financial support program aimed at assisting girls from birth through higher education. This study examines how Kanya Sumangala Yojana facilitates the empowerment of daughters through education, explores the legal and policy frameworks supporting girls’ education, and evaluates the challenges and limitations in its implementation. Using secondary data from government reports, census statistics, research studies, and policy directives, the study assesses the impact of Kanya Sumangala Yojana. Findings indicate that the program has significantly improved school enrollment, reduced dropout rates, and fostered positive social perceptions of girls’ education. Nevertheless, challenges such as lack of awareness in rural areas, economic constraints, and bureaucratic delays persist. The study concludes by emphasizing the need for increased awareness campaigns, stronger monitoring mechanisms, and integration with skill development and employment initiatives to ensure the holistic empowerment of girls in Uttar Pradesh and beyond.
